Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
OVERVIEW
Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning surgery, is a procedure designed to reshape and reposition the ears to achieve a more proportionate and balanced appearance. This procedure is suitable for addressing concerns such as prominent ears, asymmetry or congenital abnormalities. Depending on the patient’s needs, Otoplasty can be performed on one ear (unilateral) or both ears (bilateral).
During the procedure, incisions are typically made behind the ears to access and reshape the cartilage. This allows the surgeon to adjust the size, angle or position of the ears. The incisions are carefully closed to minimise visible scarring. Our Plastic Surgeons tailor each Otoplasty to the individual’s unique anatomy and goals, ensuring the best outcome for every patient.
Please note: Our Plastic Surgeons perform Otoplasty procedures only on patients aged 18 years or younger.
JOURNEY
Consultation
Your journey begins with a consultation where your surgeon will evaluate your ears, discuss your concerns, and outline your goals. They will explain the procedure, potential outcomes, and address any questions you may have.
Preparation
You’ll receive specific pre-operative instructions, including guidelines on medications, dietary restrictions, and any necessary medical evaluations to ensure you are ready for surgery.
Surgery
The procedure typically involves making incisions behind the ears to reshape and reposition the cartilage, bringing the ears closer to the head for a more balanced appearance. The incisions are then closed with sutures to minimise visible scarring.
Recovery
After surgery, you will be monitored before returning home with detailed post-operative care instructions. Swelling and discomfort are common, and you’ll be advised on how to manage these symptoms and when to resume normal activities.
Follow-up
Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your healing progress and assess the results. Your surgeon will provide guidance on any necessary care for optimal recovery.

Frequently asked questions
Here you’ll find answers to common questions about otoplasty. If you have additional inquiries or need personalised information, we encourage you to schedule a consultation for tailored advice.
Who is a good candidate for otoplasty?
Ideal candidates include individuals with protruding, asymmetrical, or disproportionately large ears. Otoplasty can be performed on both children (typically age 5 and older) and adults.
What are the benefits of otoplasty?
The procedure enhances the appearance of the ears, creating a more balanced and harmonious facial profile, which can improve self-esteem and confidence.
What is the recovery time for otoplasty?
Most patients can return to light activities within a week, but full recovery may take several weeks as swelling subsides and the ears settle into their new position.
Will there be visible scarring after otoplasty?
Incisions are made behind the ears, which helps to minimise visible scarring. Scars typically fade over time with proper care.
Can otoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Yes, otoplasty can be performed alongside other cosmetic procedures if desired, such as rhinoplasty or facial rejuvenation surgeries.
